Hijrah by Amir Mansor recalls the hustle and bustle amidst travelling through crowded areas. Arabic for migration or emigration, the title is a reference to the paths travelled by the artist. Thus, drawing from both personal experiences of hard work and domestic migration, Amir captures the auditory memories of going about daily life amidst the commotion of busy spaces. Encapsulating these overlooked moments through visual renderings, he invites the audience to immerse themselves within the landscapes of patterns that swim across the surface of blue and black canvases.
Referring to the overlaps of multiple languages when travelling through crowds, Amir embraces the fusion of our local language into his mark-making style. Expanding on his existing approach of dots and lines, he brings together strokes and patterns influenced by the scripts and characters of Jawi, Mandarin, and Tamil, marking a pivotal development in his practice. In this emphasis on our multiracial community, he calls for unity and acceptance to walk in this hijrah of life together.
