The second edition of Alchemy brings together 14 prominent artists from our local pool of talent. While some of the works featured are true to the trademark styles of certain artists, others mark something of a transformative period in their careers. Offering us a glimpse into the evolution and innovations of their upcoming series of works, we are privy to the next chapter of their practices.
The artists are Agnes Lau, Amir Mansor, Amirul Yazid, Amsyar Ramly, Anuar Rashid, Azizi Latif, Daisy Ooi, Fendy Zakri, Hana Zamri, Lina Tan, Nazhan Fikri, Rafiee Ghani, Sabri Idrus, and Zulkifli Lee.
Alchemy was a medieval forerunner of chemistry and speculative philosophy aimed at changing ordinary metals into gold, and curing diseases. Today, it acts as a metaphor to describe efforts and ideas revolving around discovery, creation, and transformation that appear seemingly magical. Ranging across emerging and established names, Alchemy 2.0 showcases artists’ works that are as unique and diverse as our multiracial country. In creating their own worlds and realities to share their ideas and perspectives, the essence of magic exists in the spirit of individuality and growth present in SARENG Gallery’s latest group exhibition.
